Budapest, Hungary #137

Budapest is the crown jewel of the river Danube. She is a magnificent cosmopolitan city, the capital of Hungary in Central Europe. The river Danube divides the hills of Buda and the plain of Pest. You can walk  hours to discover the Royal Castle in Buda or the boulevards, avenues and squares of Pest.

Here are a couple of pictures just to get an idea about the magic of this wonderful metropolis.

I enjoy studying old master drawings and academies. After practicing on a dozen Charles Bargues plates I bought a bust of Michelangelo’s David at a flea market and drew my first plaster cast in my little basement studio. Made the transition from 2 dimension to 3 dimension.

I utilized the sight-size method taught in the french ateliers in the 19th century. It took 9 hours over the course of 2 days .  I used Nitram HB charcoal on 18X24″ Strathmore paper.

If you google “Brookly Bridge” tons of pictures come up with all the imaginable angle of views, seasons and hour of the day. So it is really challenging to take a shot of this famous bridge showing something unique. Despite this, let me contribute to the tsunami of shots with my own version.
I took the shot hand held walking through the busy crowd approximately in the middle of the bridge. I emphasized the architectural geometry, the lines and shapes of the bridge. The symmetry helps to make the picture more balanced. The black and white conversion enhances the abstract impression. Furthermore, the cables provide a nice linear perspective. The flag is the icing on the cake so to speak. I manipulated the photograph to my liking using Photoshop.

Hope you enjoy the above picture. It was taken in the Brooklyn Bridge Park, though the place is not really important. What grabbed my attention is the interplay between light and shadow. This is the main subject here. The silhouette of the random scatter of the pilings provide contrast to the glittering surface of the water. The black and white conversion enhances the mood. The scene suggests a timeless feeling, an infinity signified by the title of “Eternity”.

This is a drawing after Charles Bargue‘ s Drawing Course Plate I. 44. using the sight-size method practised in French ateliers in the XIX. century. Today this technique has a renaissance in the United States of America.  It took me approximately four 3 hour sessions and additional minor corrections to complete the drawing using Nitram HB charcoal on Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper.
